김동호 위원장은 직접 일정표를 만들어 책상 옆에 붙여두었다. 전지에 빼곡이 들어찬 그의 영화제 일정은 아침 8시 조찬부터 인터뷰, 행사참석, 회의까지 쉴틈 없이 이어진다. “올해도 스쿠터를 타야 하나, 날씨가 추울 것 같은데. 그래도 시간 맞춰 이동하려면 타게 되겠죠?”라고 말하는 김동호 위원장은 밤늦은 시간인데도 피로한 기색이라곤 없었다. 그 에너지는 올해 규모가 더 커졌다는 부산영화제에 생명력을 더하고 있었다.
=작년보다 상영작이 25편 늘어났다. 질적인 면에서도 어느 때보다 만족스럽다. 영화제가 10월에서 11월로 날짜를 옮기면서 베니스영화제 참가작을 섭외할 수 있는 시간적 여유가 생긴 탓이 큰 것 같다. 게스트도 주목할 만하다. 3대 국제영화제인 칸과 베니스, 베를린 영화제 집행위원장을 포함해서 영화제 인력이 많이 방문한다. 후샤오시엔과 진가신, 스탠리 콴 등 아시아의 거장과 중견감독들도 부산을 찾는다.
-부산영화제가 조금씩 위상을 높여가면서 지금까지 올 수 있었던 원동력이 있다면?
=무엇보다 프로그램의 힘이다. 아시아 영화에 초점을 맞추면서 새로운 분야를 발굴하는 전략이 유효했던 것 같다. 문화적인 욕구나 갈증을 채우지 못하고 있던 영화팬들이 부산으로 몰려든 것도 영화제가 성공한 중요한 이유가 됐다. 해외 영화제 관계자들이 부산을 찾을 때마다 젊은 관객과, 스탭, 자원봉사자들을 보고 무척 부러워한다. 3회부터 시작한 PPP는 영화산업 관계자들이 부산영화제를 주목하게 만들었다. 올해는 컬럼비아와 미라맥스, 유니버설 관계자들도 자발적으로 PPP에 참석하겠다고 통보해왔다. 아시아 영화의 현재를 알려면 부산에 와야 한다는 분위기가 형성된 것이다.
-올해 부산영화제를 준비하면서 특별히 어려운 점이 있었는가.
=야외상영이 없어졌기 때문에 객석이 크게 줄어서 고민을 많이 했다. 어떻게 하면 보다 많은 관객에게 영화를 보여줄 수 있을 것인가하는 문제로. 부산극장 3개관에서 동시에 영화를 상영한다든지 하는 방법을 연구했다. 내년엔 다시 10월 2일께 영화제가 열릴 예정이니까 야외상영도 부활할 것이다.
-올해 특별히 주목할 만한 감독이나 영화가 있다면?
=부산영화제를 통해 성장한 프루트 챈과 지아장커가 부산을 찾고, 작년 PPP 프로젝트였던 <몬락 트랜지스터> <크라이 우먼>도 완성돼 상영될 예정이다. 개인적으로는 올해 인도영화제 심사위원으로 참석하면서 많이 봤던 인도영화들이 재미있었다. <아이어 부부>라는 영화가 있는데, 여기 나오는 사람들이 원래는 부부가 아닌데… 기억에 남는 영화였다.
-부산영화제의 얼굴이라고도 할 수 있는 사람이다. 부산을 찾은 관객들에게 인사를 전한다면.
=늦은 가을이다. 만추의 풍경을 영화와 함께 즐기시길 바란다. 최선을 다했고, 부산영화제가 아니라면 볼 수 없는 영화들이라고 자신있게 말할 수 있으니까.

This is the transportation method he chose to beat Pusan's notorious traffic jam. Do I have to ride the bike, again, this year? It seems awfully cold, says the Director, not showing any sign of fatigue even in the late hours of the night.
- What new in the 7th PIFF?
= 25 more films are added to this year's screening schedule. And I'm very much satisfied with the quality of each piece. Because the festival date was pushed to November, we gained extra time to invite films which were also invited to Venice Film Festival. Plus, this year many significant guests will be visiting PIFF, such as the Festival Directors of Cannes Festival, Venice Festival, and Berlinale. Not only that, great directors, such as Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Chen Kexin and Stanley Kwan will also be visiting Pusan.
- What is the driving force behind PIFF?
= I think it's the power of our selection. We focused on Asian Cinema and worked hard at developing a new division in the world cinema. Also the all the film manias in Korea, who came to Pusan to satisfy their thirst for more films and cultural experience, played a big part in making PIFF such a success. And PPP, which began in the 3rd PIFF, received much attention from all the international film industry circuit and shone a spotlight on PIFF. This year, representatives from Columbia TriStar, Miramax Films and Universal Pictures informed us that they will be attending PPP voluntarily.
- On which director, or a film, should we keep an eye on?
= Directors who matured in PIFF, such as Fruit Chen and Jia Zhang Ke are coming back to Pusan and last year's PPP projects and have been completed and will be screened. As a personal note, I've watched some great Indian films as well, when I attended an Indian film festival this year as a jury.
- Lastly, a greeting to all visitors coming to Pusan.
