“‘쿨’보다 ‘신파’가 매력적”
2001년 개봉한 <봄날은 간다> 이후 2년만에 모습을 드러낸 허진호 감독이 신작 프로젝트 <행복>(가제)과 함께 PPP를 찾았다. “정상적이고 평범한 삶속에서 나오는 이야기 말고, 매우 극적인 상황속에서 나오는 사랑이야기를 하고 싶었다”는 <행복>은 온전히 두 사람만의 고치 속에 파고든 남녀가 서로에게 의지해서 행복하게 사랑하고, 치유되고 그리고 이별하는 이야기. 하지만 이 프로젝트는 여전히 시나리오를 고쳐 나가는 단계이자, 희미하게 색과 냄새만 느껴지는 연기같은 상태다. “일단 간단한 시놉시스를 제출하긴 했지만 한 남자와 두 여자가 될 수 있고, 그저 한 남녀의 이야기가 될 수도 있을 것이다. 내 작업방식이 원래 그렇다. 새로운 버전이 나오면서 전혀 다른 이야기가 될런지도 모른다” 하지만 분명한 사실 하나는 <행복>이 그 어떤 허진호 감독의 영화보다 “물기있고, 감정이 풍부한 영화”가 될 것이란 것.
“DVD 작업 때문에 와 <봄날은 간다>를 연달아 볼 기회가 생겼다. 문득 <봄날은 간다>가 참 건조하게 찍혔다는 생각이 들었다. 카메라가 참 멀기도 하고. 단순히 카메라와 인물과의 물리적 위치뿐 아니라, 인물을 바라보는 심리적 거리 역시 너무 먼 것이 아닐까 하는 생각이 들었다. 어쩌면 나란 사람이 그 사이 참 건조해 졌다는 사실을 깨달았다. 이번에는 카메라도 좀 더 가깝게 가고 싶고, 감정의 표출도 조금 더 많았으면 좋겠다.” 때만 해도 세상을 적당히 거리를 두고 바라보고 싶어 했는데 “삶이란 게 그러기 어렵다는 걸 깨달아간다”는 허진호 감독은 워킹타이틀로 뽑은 ‘행복’이란 단어에 대해 “내 두 영화 어디에나 붙여도 무방한 제목, 또한 영화를 만들면서 늘 생각하는 단어”라고 설명한다.
시대가 강요하는 ‘쿨’이라는 단어 대신 ‘신파’에 더 매력을 느낀다는 이 ‘거꾸로 가는 감독’은 이제 “울고 싶으면 울 수도 있고, 가슴이 아프면 아픈, 여러 가지 감정을 표출하고 싶다”고, “이 사랑이 얼마나 갈까라고 염려하는 것, 사랑의 지속성에 대한 고민이 행복을 막는 것”이라고 조용히 뇌까린다. 아직 우리는 허진호의 <행복>이 어떤 형태를 가지게 될런지 짐작할 수 없다. 다만 그의 세번째 사랑은 유리창 너머로 안타깝게 안녕을 고하는 대신, 봄날이 간 후에 멍하니 뒷모습을 응시하는 대신, 사랑이 다가 온 순간 마음껏 투정하고, 마음껏 울고, 마음껏 사랑하는 그런 ‘촌스런 현명함’을 가지게 될 것 같다.

"Shinpa!" Not "cool."
Two years after his last film <One Fine Spring Day>(2001), director HUR Jin-ho makes his return at PPP with his new project <The Happiness>(working title). According to HUR, he is "not interested in telling an ordinary love story. [He's] interested in a love story that springs out from a dramatic situation." With that in mind, <The Happiness> is about a man and a woman who have isolated themselves in their own world, where they learn to depend on each other, to love each other, to heal each other and, lastly, to learn to go on their separate ways. However, still in its redrafting stage, the story exists only in a vague form of colors and shapes. "I submitted a short synopsis for now, but, it might be changed to have a man and two women. Or maybe, it might stay the way it is now - a man and a woman. That's how I work. It may become a completely different story in the next draft." However, one thing is clear. <The Happiness> will be the most 'sensual and passionate film' by HUR Jin-oh.
"Recently, while working on DVD production for <Christmas in August> and <One Fine Spring Day>, I got a chance to watch them one after another. Then I suddenly realized <One Fine Spring Day> was shot in such a dry manner. I felt like, physically, the camera kept its distance from the characters and psychologically, the characters were too objectively viewed. Perhaps, I've changed and became a more dry person. This time, I want the camera up front with the characters and I want to show more emotions." HUR says when he was making <Christmas in August>, he wanted to view the world objectively. However, now he realizes "it's too difficult to live a life like that." About 'happiness,' the word chosen to be the working title for his new project, he explains "it's a word that suits both of my 2 previous films and it's a word that I constantly thinks about when I'm working on my projects."
HUR is a 'backward director' who finds 'shinpa' more attractive than 'cool' (shinpa: exaggerated and tearful melodrama). He says quietly, "I want to portray all sorts of emotions - in tears, in pain, etc. Worrying about how long this love's gonna last will hinder you from experiencing the true happiness." No one knows for sure how <The Happiness> will turn out. However, rather than a heartbreaking goodbye from behind the window and distant gaze at your long forgotten lover, HUR's 3rd film will have plenty of tears, laughters, anger and lots of love.
