외신기자와 일반 관객들 반응 뜨거워,
일반상영작 무료 관람 가능
북한 영화 상영전이 7일 오전 11시30분 남포동 대영극장에서 생각보다 적은 관객들이 지켜보는 가운데 무사히 막을 열었다. 지난 98년부터 북한영화 상영을 준비해 온 부산 국제영화제 조직위가 8회를 맞아 오랜 숙원을 달성한 것. 심의 문제로 진통을 겪던 일곱편의 북한영화 중 다섯 편은 고스란히 관객의 품에 안기게 됐고, 나머지 두 편은 제한 상영이나마 빛을 보게 됐다. 상영전이 열린 첫날 대영 2관에서 제한적으로 상영된 <내 고향>의 경우 스무명 정도가 관람하는 데 그쳤고, 같은 시간 대영 3관에서 상영된 <신혼부부>는 일반에게 공개된 덕분에 150명 가량이 관람을 했다. 두 작품 모두 ID 카드 예매분은 매진 사례를 기록했으나, 정작 상영관에 나타난 게스트는 거의 없었다.
반면 외신기자들의 관심은 뜨거웠다. 영문 자막이 제공되지 않음에도, <헐리우드 리포터> <스크린 인터내셔널> <버라이어티>등 해외잡지에서 파견된 기자들이 앞 줄을 메웠으며, 영화가 끝난 뒤 “기술적인 완성도가 높다”고 입을 모았다. <내고향>을 본 <스크린 인터내셔널>의 달시 기자는 “40년대 작품이라고 믿어지지 않을 만큼 화면이 안정됐고, 촬영 기법 또한 세련됐다”고 소감을 밝혔다. 다큐멘터리 감독이자 영화관련 웹사이트 ‘Cinema Gauche’의 운영자인 나이젤 사비오사는 “자막이 없어 스토리를 자세히 알 순 없지만, 사실적이고 서사적인 화면에 깊은 인상을 받았다”고 전했다. 이 자리에는 남인영 홍대 교수도 동석했는데, “한 눈에 웰메이드 영화라는 것을 알 수 있으며, 배우들의 연기가 절제되어 있어, 같은 시기 남한 영화에 등장하는 배우들의 과장한 목소리톤과 표정 연기에 비교할 만하다”고 평했다.
<신혼부부>를 본 관객들의 반응은 대체로 “놀랍다”는 것. 인천에서 온 김운정(24)씨는 “북한 영화라고 해서 조잡하고, 선동 일색이라고 생각했는데, 뮤지컬 형식을 과감히 도입한 부분이나 대사가 세련되게 느껴졌다”고 칭찬을 아끼지 않았다. 이번 특별전을 통해 40년대에서 90년대 사이에 제작된 7편의 작품들이 3일간에 걸쳐 남포동 대영시네마 2관과 3관에서 각 1회씩 상영 될 예정이다. 그 중 <내고향>과 <봄날의 눈석이>는 심의를 통해 제한 상영작으로 결정돼 영화제 ID 패스 소지자에 한해 상영되며, 그외의 5편의 작품은 일반인의 관람이 가능하다. 5편의 일반상영작의 경우, 발권소에서 예매를 할 수 있으며 관람권은 무료 배부된다.
North Korean films impress the audience!
On October 7th at 11:30am, the curtain went up on the very first official screening of North Korean films at Daeyoung Cinema. Due to censorship issues, only 5 out of 7 invited films are opened to general audience and 2 to restricted screening. On the first day, only about 20 people attended the restricted screening of <My Hometown>. However, for the screening of <Newly Weds>, which was opened to the general public, over 150 people attended.
For both films, advance purchase tickets for ID cardholders were sold out, but barely no guests showed up at the screening. Even though English subtitle was not available, many reporters from foreign film magazines, such as <Screen International> and <Variety>, showed great interest and took the front row seats. Afterwards, they complimented on "overall high technicality" of the film.
After watching <My Hometown>, Darcy PARQUET from <Screen International> commented, "the stability of the film is quite impressive considering it was made in 1940's. Plus, it had very refined camera work." Nigel SAVIO D'SA, a documentary filmmaker and an owner of 'Cinema Gauche,' was deeply impressed by "realistic and descriptive quality of the film." Overall reaction for <Newly Weds> was 'impressive,' as well. One visitor praised "its daring musical parts and the polished dialogue."
