영화음악 마스터 클래스
영화음악의 사려깊은 팬들에게 5월4일은 의미있는 하루였을 것이다. 이날 오후 2시부터 저녁 7시까지, 메가박스 10관에서는 영화음악 감독 조성우의 제작실습과 마스터 클래스가 진행됐다. 영화를 구성하는 중요한 요소들의 특징들을 살펴보고, 그것을 만들어내는 각 분야의 대가들과 관객과의 만남을 이끌어내려는 취지에서 마련한 마스터클래스는 작년에 이어 두번째로 열리는 행사. 올해의 마스터클래스에는 한일 양국의 영화음악 대가인 조성우와 가와이 겐지가 초빙되었다.
오후 2시의 영화음악 제작실습에 이어서 열린 영화감독 조성우의 마스터 클래스는 빈 자리가 없을 정도로 성황이었다. “영화음악을 좋아하는 분들과 만나서 매우 의미있는 자리라고 생각한다“고 운을 뗀 조성우는 1시간여동안 특유의 조용한 어법으로 영화음악의 정체성과 미래에 대한 자신의 소견을 털어놓았다. 특히 그는 “영화음악은 추상적인 음악이 아니다. 추상적인 아이디어를 영화라는 문맥속에서 구체화시켜야만 진정한 영화음악”이라고 재차 강조하며 영화음악의 의미를 재조명했다. 강연에 이어서 열린 김관희 모더레이터와의 Q&A시간은 영화음악가 조성우의 현실적인 고민들을 짚어볼 수 있는 시간이었다. 영화속에서 영화음악이 어떤 방식으로 기능하는 것이 가장 이상적이냐는 질문에 조성우는 “일반적인 기능은 영화의 감정을 끌어올리는 것이지만, 동시에 하나의 음악으로서의 예술적 가치를 실현해야 한다”며 영화음악가로서의 고민을 토로하기도 했다. 장시간 계속된 실습과 강의에도 불구하고, 청중들은 자리를 뜨지 않은 채 한국 영화음악계의 거장이 말하는 솔직한 이야기에 귀를 기울였다.
5월5일에는 <아바론>과 <이노센스>의 시사에 이어, 두 작품의 음악을 담당한 가와이 겐지의 마스터 클래스가 열릴 예정이다. 전주의 마지막 밤은 영화와 음악이 함께 어우러져 깊어가고 있다.
Cho Seong-woo Master Class
‘Master Class’ with a film music director, Cho Seong-woo was held at Magabox from 2 to 7 on May 4. It was first started with the goal of exploring important factors such as aesthetical and practical aspects that constitute a film and to bring forth encounter and discussions between audiences and masters in each field in 2004. In this ‘second Master Class,’ Masters of film music, Cho Seong-woo of Korea and Kawai Kenji of Japan, were invited.
‘Master Class’ led by Cho Seong-woo after the seminar on film music composition practice was so successful that there was even no seat to take. With his first word, “It is very significant time for me to meet you who sincerely love film music”, he composedly set forth his opinion on identity and future of film music for around one hour. It was especially impressive when he again illuminated the meaning of film music that ‘film music is NOT an abstract music. We can say it genuine film music only when you make abstract idea concrete and specific in the context of film.’ At Q&A time with Cho Seong-woo led by moderator Kim Kwan-hee, audiences could hear his practical thoughts. When an audience asked what the most ideal way that film music functions in the film is, he said, “While the general role of film music is to lift up the emotion of film, you also should realize artistic and aesthetic value as a completed music in itself.” In spite that the class and lecture continued for a long time, any audiences hardly left and paid attention to the frank talk spoken by the master of Korean film music. On May 5, after the showing of Avalon and Innocence, there will be ‘Master Class’ of Kawai Kenji directing the music of both films. The last night in Jeonju goes darker with the film music.
