평화로운 교외 중산층 주택가가 악몽과 판타지의 세계로 변화는 <공포의 집>은 랜스 드리센과 클린트 허치슨이라는 두 이야기꾼의 감독 데뷔작이다. 조지아주 애틀랜타 출신의 단짝 친구인 두 감독은 단편영화와 <찰리스 고스트 스토리> <아서의 탐험> 등 아동영화를 비롯한 수 편의 시나리오를 거쳐온 시나리오 작가 출신. 190cm는 족히 넘는 거구에, 막힘없이 영화라는 꿈의 노정을 들려주는 드리센은 과연 이야기꾼이었다.
교외 중산층의 주택가를 공포의 무대로 삼았는데, 안정돼 보이는 삶의 이면을 보여주고 싶었던 건가. 우리도 교외에서 자랐지만, 늘 ‘모든 게 좋아 보이는데, 정말 저 문 뒤에선 어떤 일이 일어나고 있을까’하는 생각들을 갖고 있었다. 원래 각본은 <납골당의 미스테리>에 나오는 묘지지기처럼 섬뜩한 캐릭터가, 미국의 각각 다른 지역에서 일어나는 이야기를 들려주는 식이었다. 그런데 모든 이야기가 다 집에 얽힌 거고, 그 집들을 다 이웃에 모으면 좋겠다고 생각한 거다.
시나리오 작가, 연기 강사 등 여러가지 일을 하다가 감독 데뷔한 계기는. 프로듀서인 리처드와 나, 클린트는 모두 어린 시절 함께 자란 친구들이고, 언젠가 같이 영화를 만들자고 얘기해왔다. 유니버설에서 장편 시나리오 작업을 한 적도 있는데, 큰 영화사에서는 스탭을 아주 쉽게 갈아치운다. 그래서 직접 영화를 만들겠다고 결심했다. 우리 셋은 자이언트 리프(Giant Leap)란 영화사를 만들어 영화를 찍었다. 완전히 독립적으로. 당연히 확정된 배급라인 같은 것도 없이 찍었다. 만들고 나자 반응이 좋았다. USA필름에서 영화를 샀고, 비디오와 DVD로도 잘 됐고, 지금은 세계적으로 보여지고 있다.
왜 영화감독이 되고 싶었나. 축복인지 저주인지 모르겠지만, 어렸을 때 <스타워즈>나 <미지와의 조우>같은 영화를 봤다. 둘다 77년에 개봉됐고, 난 십대였는데, 너무 아름답고 황홀해서 거의 종교적인 체험에 가까웠다. 와, 저게 뭔지는 모르겠지만, 저걸 하고 싶어, 그랬다. 그때는 정말 판타지 영화를 좋아하는 나같은 사람들에겐 최고의 시대였다. 살아오면서 사랑하고, 정말 하고 싶었던 일을 어떻게든 하고 있다는 것은 정말 굉장하다.
새 작품은 어떤 영화인가. . 성경의 묵시록에 나오는 이야기에서 따왔지만, 물론 종교적인 영화는 아니다. 액션 스릴러, 서스펜스 SF물이다. 환경주의자인 테러리스트(ecoterrorist)에 대한 액션 영화이고, 현재 각본을 쓰고 있다.

A peaceful middle class suburban neighborhood turns into a world of nightmares and fantasies in Lance W. Dreesen and Clint Hutchison's debut film . The two storytellers, best friends ever since their childhood in Atlanta Georgia, started off as scenario writers for various films, not to mention children's films like and many more. At an astounding 6 feet 3 inches the two tell us about their dream journey called films, certainly living up to their reputation as storytellers.
You used a middle class suburban neighborhood as the scary setting. Did you want to reveal what lies underneath a stable looking life? Growing up in the suburbs, we always had this question in the back of our minds "Everything looks sound, but what lies behind those doors?" We initially planned for a grotesque graveyard keeper kind of character like the one in to tell stories happening all over different parts of the U.S. But all the stories in the film have something to do with houses, so we thought it would be better to gather all of them in one neighborhood.
What made you debut as a director after working as a scenario writer, acting tea- cher, etc.? The three of us, Richard, me and Clint (now producers) all grew up together, talking about making a film together someday. We worked on a feature film scenario at Universal Studios one time, but you know how easily big film productions replace staff members, so we decided to make a movie on our own. We founded a film production called "Giant Leap" and made films. We shot the films without secured distribution routes. After we made the film, it turned out that many people liked it. USA film bought the movie, videos and DVDs sold well, and now it is being shown around the world.
Why did you want to become a film director? I don? know if it's a blessing or a curse, but after seeing and , both released in 1977 when I was a teenager, I was completely enraptured by such beauty that I almost went through a spiritual experience. Wow, I don't know what that is, but I'd give anything to make one of those. Yes, it was a great period for people like me who liked fantasy films. I think it's really great to be doing something you really want to, and love doing.
Could you tell us about your new film? The title is . We got the idea from the Book of Revelations, but of course it isn't a religious movie. The film is a mixture of an action thriller full of suspense and a science fiction movie. It's about an ecoterrorist and the script is currently underway.
